The Nepali community here is the newest of the six and among the fastest growing. It is also the most dispersed relative to its size, which changes how people find each other.
Kathmandu and inside Nepal
Kathmandu holds most of the resident community, with Pokhara a distant second. It is young, largely urban and professional, and almost entirely conversation-based — there is no organised scene, and anything presenting itself as one is worth treating cautiously.
On law: Nepal's legal framework on private conduct has changed in recent years and provisions differ from India's. We are not able to state the current position with confidence, and would not want a member to rely on a website for it — take local legal advice if it matters to your circumstances.
Socially, the position is closer to India's than to Pakistan's: the primary risk is family and community exposure rather than legal consequence.
The working diaspora
Nepal has one of the highest rates of labour migration in the world, and it shapes this community more than any other factor. Large populations in the Gulf — Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia — and in Malaysia, mostly individuals on contracts rather than couples.
India holds a very large Nepali population, particularly in Delhi NCR, and cross-border contact between Kathmandu and Delhi members is common.
The practical effect is a community with an unusual balance: more single members abroad, more couples at home, and a lot of connection maintained across borders for long periods.
The settled communities
The UK has a distinctive and long-established Nepali population connected to Gurkha service — Aldershot and the wider Hampshire area especially, with communities also in Reading, Ashford and Kent. Settled, multigenerational, and dense enough that discretion norms apply firmly.
Australia has grown very quickly, particularly in Sydney and Melbourne, and skews young and student-connected.
Portugal and Japan hold smaller but growing communities.
What members say
Language matters, but so does the distinction between Nepali members and the broader Indian community — many report being lumped in with it on other platforms and finding that it makes conversations harder rather than easier.
Distance is the defining practical problem. More than in any other community here, connections begin as long-running conversations with no immediate prospect of meeting, and are sustained around travel home.
