Toronto holds the largest Sri Lankan Tamil population anywhere outside the island, and the most active Tamil lifestyle community on this platform. It is also a community with a particular history, and that shapes how it behaves.
Where members are
Scarborough holds the densest Tamil population in the GTA and the largest share of members.
Markham and Ajax skew towards families who moved out from Scarborough, generally older and more settled.
Mississauga and Brampton hold a more mixed community, with Indian Tamil members alongside Sri Lankan.
Two communities in one city
Sri Lankan Tamil and Indian Tamil members are both present here in numbers, and they are distinct communities with different histories, dialects and reference points.
Most Sri Lankan Tamil families in Toronto arrived from the mid-1980s onwards as a result of the civil war. It is a community with a shared history that Indian Tamil members do not have, and members are generally clear about which they are and which they are looking for.
How it behaves
More socially open than Chennai by a wide margin — organised gatherings exist, and couples reach the meeting stage faster.
Discretion norms remain strong, for the ordinary diaspora reason: the community is large but tightly interconnected through temples, associations and school networks, and the chance of a mutual acquaintance is high.
A notable share of members maintain connections back to Colombo and Jaffna, and to the Tamil community in London.
