The West Midlands holds the largest Punjabi community in the UK, settled since the 1950s and 60s and now three and four generations deep. It is older, more established and rather more reserved than its Canadian counterpart.
Where members are
Handsworth, Smethwick and Soho Road hold the historic core of the community.
Wolverhampton, Walsall and West Bromwich hold large and long-settled populations.
Coventry and Leicester are close enough that members move between them, and many deliberately do.
Both Sikh Punjabi and Muslim Punjabi communities are substantial here, and they are distinct.
Three generations deep
This is not a recent migration. Families have been here since the 1950s, and the community has the density that comes with that — gurdwara and mosque networks, family businesses, and school connections spanning decades.
The result is that discretion norms are as strict as anywhere in this series despite complete legal freedom. The risk here has never been legal; it is that your aunt knows their aunt.
How it behaves
More reserved than Brampton, faster than Leicester. Conversations run for weeks, verification is expected, and members are careful about photographs.
Looking outside the immediate area is common — London, Manchester, Nottingham — and for the obvious reason.
Contact with Punjabi members in Canada and Australia is routine, and often follows actual family connections.
