Houston holds one of the oldest and largest Gujarati communities in the United States, established well before the technology-driven migration that shaped the Telugu and Kannada communities. It is settled, business-oriented, and unusually private.
Where members are
Sugar Land and Stafford hold the densest Gujarati population in the Houston area.
Katy and Pearland hold newer, generally younger families.
Houston's Gujarati community overlaps considerably with its Telugu and wider Indian populations, and members frequently connect across those lines.
Older migration, different character
Much of this community arrived from the 1970s onwards, often via East Africa or the UK, and is now several generations settled. That gives it a different character from the newer professional migrations — more business-owning, more multigenerational, more embedded.
It also means denser family networks locally, which is the main reason members here are more private than the Telugu community in the same city despite the greater social freedom.
How it behaves
Slower and more careful than the Texas average. Conversations run long, verification is expected, and members are noticeably reluctant to share faces.
International connections are strong — Leicester, London, Toronto and Nairobi all recur, following the same East African and UK migration paths that brought families here.
