Wife swap, wifeswap and swapping: the same thing in different words

All three describe two couples agreeing that each will be intimate with the other’s partner. Couples who take part tend to say simply “swapping”, because “wife swap” puts the husband in charge of an exchange and leaves out the fact that wives choose too. It is not the television format of the same name, in which two families exchange households for a week. That is a reality show; nothing intimate is involved.

What a consenting swap needs

Every person involved agrees in advance, knowing what has been agreed. That means all four adults talk, ideally together and ideally before anything else happens. Agree what is and is not included, whether you stay in the same room, how you will stop, and what happens afterwards.

Soft swap and full swap are the two common levels. Where the line sits differs for every couple, which is why it must be stated rather than assumed.

Meeting the other couple

Meet somewhere public first, with no pressure to go further. Tell someone you trust where you will be. Keep your own transport and your own phone, and keep the first meeting short. If anything feels off, leave; a couple who respect you will not mind.

Red flags

A husband who answers for his wife, a couple who will not video-call before meeting, requests for money or intimate photos, and anyone who treats a changed mind as something to be argued with. Any one of these is reason enough to walk away.

After the evening

Talk the next day. Say what felt good and what did not, without blame. Couples who plan this conversation tend to stay close; couples who skip it are the ones who report regret.
