How the scams work — and how to shut them down

How sextortion actually works

A profile makes contact quickly, is unusually attractive, moves the conversation to a private messaging app or a video call within a day or two, and steers towards revealing photographs or a recorded video call. Then the demand arrives, usually with a screenshot of your contact list or your family members' profiles attached.

The pattern is consistent: speed, flattery, a push off-platform, and pressure. Any one of those is a reason to slow down. All four together is a script.

Prevention, in order of effectiveness

Never move off-platform early. A platform can verify, moderate and ban. A private messaging number is an identity, and once someone has it they have a way to reach your real life.

Insist on a video call, on your terms, before anything revealing. Scammers avoid live, unscripted calls, or use pre-recorded footage — ask them to do something specific and unpredictable.

Keep faces and identifying details out of anything shared early. Nothing that could sit next to your name.

Do not reuse usernames or photographs from other platforms. This is how targets are identified and how contact lists are found.

Trust urgency as a warning. Genuine members are not in a hurry.

If you are being blackmailed

Do not pay. Payment confirms you are a paying target and demands continue. This is the consistent experience of everyone who has paid.

Do not delete anything. Screenshot the profile, the messages, the payment details and any account names. That is the evidence.

Block, then report — to the platform, and to the police. In India, report to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or call 1930. In the UK, Action Fraud. In the US, the FBI's IC3.

Tell someone. The blackmailer's entire leverage is your silence, and it collapses the moment one person you trust knows.

Report to us as well so the account is removed and others are protected.

The other common scams

Pay-to-meet. A site, agency or individual asks for a joining fee, registration fee or "verification deposit" to introduce you to couples. This is always a scam, and frequently an extortion setup. Genuine communities never charge for introductions.

The fake couple. One person operating an account with photographs taken from elsewhere. A video call ends this in thirty seconds.

The screenshot collector. A real person who joins to gather images and share them elsewhere. This is why private albums matter and why revealing material should never be sent by direct message.

Advance-fee travel. A member who needs money for a ticket or a hotel to visit you. There is no version of this that is genuine.

What a platform should be doing

Verification that is difficult to fake, private albums with revocable access, photo metadata stripped on upload, reporting on every profile and message, and a moderation team that acts on reports rather than filing them.

None of that removes your own judgement, but it changes the odds substantially — and it is why the safest place to have these conversations is somewhere accountable rather than in a private messaging app.
